
VASILE JUCAN
Born in 1957 in Romania, Vasile Jucan studied music and violoncello at the Sigismund Toduță High School of Music in Cluj-Napoca and at the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music from the same town.
Since 1987 he is a founding member of the Transylvanian Quartet, with which, in a relatively short period of time, he has won numerous national awards and distinctions, including the first prize at the National Competition for String Quartets Gheorghe Dima, the Romanian Critics Association Award and the award of the Union of Romanian Composers. Only two years after its formation, due to the exceptional professional level, the Transylvanian Quartet acquired the status of a state quartet within the Transylvania Philharmonic in Cluj-Napoca.
The participation of the quartet at the Orlando Festival in Kerkrade (Netherlands), in 1990, was the launch of the ensemble on international stages. As a member of the quartet, Vasile Jucan has perfected his chamber performance with notable personalities in the field, including Wilhelm Georg Berger, Gerhard Schulz, Thomas Kakuska, Earl Carlyss and world-class ensembles such as the Emerson String Quartet, American String Quartet, Cleveland Quartet and Mendelssohn String Quartet. He has performed in concerts with well-known artists, both in Romania and on the big stages of the world: Ștefan Ruha, Cristina Anghelescu, Marin Cazacu, Dana Borșan, Aurel Marc, Adriana Bera, Daniel Goiți, Mihai Ungureanu, Dan Grigore, Valentin Gheorghiu , Mirel Iancovici, Sherban Lupu, Aurelian Octav Popa, Rudolf Firkušný, Michel Bourdoncle, Rita Sloan, Erick Friedman, Luz Leskowitz, Sharon Bezaly, Jeremy Menuhin, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Dejan Lazić, Götz Teutsch, János Bálint.
The intense artistic activity with the Transylvanian Quartet is reflected in the many concerts always held at a high level, in Romania and all around the world. The quartet has been invited to prestigious international festivals such as Aspen Music Festival, Ravinia Festival (USA), Aldeburgh, Bath, Edinburgh, Belfast (UK), Kuhmo (Finland), Bad Gleichenberg, Salzburg (Austria), Chemnitz (Germany), Salamanca (Spain), Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), Aix-en-Provence (France).
In the countless concerts held abroad, during his activity of more than 35 years, the Quartet has performed in famous concert halls: Wigmore Hall (London), Pleyel (Paris), Queen’s Hall (Edinburgh), Maltings Hall (Aldeburgh), Mandell Hall (Chicago), Wilshire Ebell Theater (Los Angeles), Elmwood Hall (Belfast), Brussels Royal Conservatory.
Vasile Jucan combines the artistic activity with teaching and managerial activity. Since 2001 he has been a university teacher at the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca, where he also obtained a doctorate in music in 2006, under the scientific guidance of maestro Eduard Terényi. In the period 2004-2012 he was dean of the Faculty of Music Performance, and since 2012 he has been rector of the Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca.
