VIOREL MUNTEANU

He studied at the “George Enescu” Conservatory in Iași, graduating successively in the music pedagogy (1969) and composition (1975), being a disciple of Professor Vasile Spătărelu. In 1980, at the proposal of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists, he benefited from a specialization and documentary scholarship offered by the Italian Government at the “Santa Cecilia” Academy in Rome; he specialized in polyphony and composition with the famous Italian musician of Romanian origin Roman Vlad (1981 – 1985). His interest in Roman Vlad’s work which he constantly promoted in Romania, both through a doctoral thesis and through the editing of compositions or the translation and care of his musicological writings, dates back to that time.
Viorel Munteanu worked until 1985 at the Radio-Television in Iași, at the same time starting his teaching career at the Conservatory. He has been a university professor since 1991 (subjects counterpoint, orchestration and composition) and a doctoral supervisor since 2001, directing doctoral theses at the National University of Arts „G. Enescu ”from Iași and in collaboration with the University“ Al. I. Cuza ”Iași, Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome – Italy, Institute of Postdoctoral Studies – National University of Music Bucharest. He was the leader of the Music Editorial Office at the Iași Radio Studio (1982-1985 and 1990-1991), he held the position of Dean (1995-96 and 2000-2004) and Rector of the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iași (2004 – 2008 and 2008 – 2012). He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists (since 1990) and coordinator of the Iași Branch of UCMR (since 2005).
