
DAN DEDIU
Dan Dediu (* 1967, Brăila) studied composition in Bucharest with Ştefan Niculescu and Dan Constantinescu, and in Vienna with Francis Burt. Various creative or research scholarships (Herder and Alban Berg – Vienna, Ircam – Paris, New Europe College – Bucharest, College of Sciences – Berlin, Villa Concordia – Bamberg) have played a decisive role in his composition evolution. He composed over 170 works covering almost all musical genres: 5 symphonies and other orchestral pieces (Narcotic Spaces, Ornements, Studii-Motto, Spaima, Frenesia, Mantrana, Grana, Verva, Atlantis, Elegia minacciosa, Levante), 11 concerts (saxophone, viola, violin, piano, cello, flute, double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra, triple concerto for flute, clarinet, cello and orchestra, triple concerto for violin, cello, piano and orchestra), 7 string quartets, chamber music in various ensembles, piano music, choirs, electronic music, five operas (Post-fiction, Münchhausen, Eva !, O Scrisoare pierdută, D’ale carnavalului) and a ConcertOpera (Wagner Under).
Winner of several national and international composition awards (Vienna, Dresden, Paris, Berlin, Ludwigshafen, 10 awards of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists, Romanian Academy Award, “George Enescu” Competition Award), Dan Dediu is published by Editura Muzicală and Peermusic (Hamburg-New York). His works have appeared on CDs in Romania (Casa Radio, Music Publishing House), Germany (Pro Viva, Cavalli Records, Neos, Klanglogo), Australia (Move Records), The Netherlands (NM Extra),
He also published two monographs (on Ludovic Feldman and Dan Constantinescu – the latter together with Valentina Sandu-Dediu), a volume of essays (Radicalization and guerrilla warfare), a composition guide (The 9i. Possible guide to musical composition after fictionalist method), as well as studies, articles and conferences.
Between 2003 and 2006, he made 88 episodes for TVR from the musical initiation series “The Adventure of Sounds”, for which he received the ATF award for 2004, and 12 episodes from the series “Music from an exhibition” (2008-2009). He is an Officer of the Order “For Education” (2004), a Knight (2008) and an Officer (2014) of the Order “Cultural Merit”.
As artistic director, he coordinated the International New Music Week festival (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2016-21 editions) and the Profile festival (2004 and 2006 editions).
Dan Dediu is a professor of composition, he was the head of the composition department at the National University of Music in Bucharest, he is the artistic director of the Profil Ensemble, and between 2008-2016 he was the rector of the National University of Music in Bucharest. He is also an honorary doctor of the “George Enescu” University of Arts in Iași and of the University of Craiova.
