ADRIAN POP

Born in Cluj in 1951, the composer Adrian Pop was trained under the successive guidance of his father, the renowned choirmaster and professor Dorin Pop, then studied composition at the “Gheorghe Dima” Academy of Music in Cluj between 1970 and 1976 with maestros Sigismund Toduţă and Cornel Ţăranu.

His assertion in the national and international context came in the late 1970s, with several symphonic and choral works that were a lasting success. His creations have been distinguished over time with numerous awards (several times the Romanian Composers Union Award, the “George Enescu” Award of the Romanian Academy, awards at international composition competitions in France, Italy, Austria, Spain, Africa South).

A long collaboration connected him with the prestigious “Transylvania” State Philharmonic, as secretary and artistic consultant and as general director. He was rector of the “Gheorghe Dima” Academy of Music, currently being an associate professor of the same institution in the composition discipline.

He was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the President of Romania and is a Knight of the “Ordre des Arts et des Lettres”, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture.

His music, in a style that follows the synthesis between the values of tradition and the spirit of modernity, is appreciated by the public and specialists, being frequently performed in the country and abroad. Among the most recent performances are the International New Music Week festivals – Bucharest, George Enescu International Festival – Bucharest, Intrada Festival – Timisoara, Contemporary Music Days – Chisinau, Pyramidale Festival – Berlin, Paul Celan Festival – Munich, Cluj Autumn Music Festival, Autoritratti Festival – Milan, Cluj Modern Festival.

Adrian Pop is also appreciated as a teacher, being invited to give master-class in composition both in the country and abroad (Italy, UK), and also as a member of the juries of national and international competitions for composition, musical performance, choir, lied, melodrama – in the country and abroad (Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Bulgaria).
